About Ougiya Kimono Studio
Thank you very much for visiting the website of Ougiya Kimono Studio.
“Ougiya” was founded in 1898 in Yotsuya, Shinjuku, Tokyo.
In 1936, the business moved to Tsukuda in Chuo-ku, where we mainly provided traditional “araihari” (washing and re-stretching of kimono fabric) as a specialist kimono care shop (shikkai).
In 2015, in order to expand our services, we established a dedicated restoration workshop in Minato, Chuo-ku. Under the name “Kimono Studio Ougiya”, we now handle a wide range of restoration work, including stain removal, color correction, washing, and structural repairs.
Nearly 20 years have passed since we first launched this website.
Today, we are grateful to receive requests not only from all over Japan, but also from customers overseas.
Many of the kimono we are entrusted with have stains or damage that other shops have judged to be “impossible to repair.” Even in such cases, we carefully examine each piece and consider how we can help, treating every item with sincerity and respect.
We are deeply thankful for the letters and emails of appreciation we receive after delivery. Your warm words remind us that, in a small way, our work is useful and meaningful.
Our technical progress is only possible because of the many requests and challenges that our customers bring to us. In our view, there is no such thing as a point where technique becomes “perfect” and complete. We believe it is essential to remain humble, to continue learning, and to keep improving our skills so that we can respond to the changing needs of the times.
We will continue to devote ourselves to our craft and to serving our customers with care.
We sincerely appreciate your continued support.

- Consultation by shipping (within Japan)
In-Person Consultation at Our Studio
1. Contact & Reservation
Kimono Studio Ougiya operates by appointment so that we can dedicate enough time to each consultation.
Before visiting, please contact us by phone or email to make a reservation.
- Standard consultation time: about 30 minutes
- When you book, we will ask about:
- Whether you have an upcoming occasion for wearing the kimono
- Whether you need same-day stain removal
- The number of items you plan to bring
- Other concerns or deadlines
We give priority to customers with reservations. If you visit without an appointment, we may need to ask you to come back on another day.
If you expect to be late for your appointment, please contact us in advance so that we can adjust the schedule.
We apologize for any inconvenience and thank you for your understanding.

2. Visiting Our Studio
Please come to the studio at your reserved time.
You may open the workshop door and enter directly; there is no need to knock.
If it is your first visit, please refer to our Access & Map page, where we provide directions with video, maps, and written guidance.
3. Proposal & Estimate
Based on the information you provide, we will examine your kimono in person.
We will then propose:
- The most suitable restoration methods for your needs
- A realistic restoration goal
- An estimated cost
While we always aim to remove stains as completely as possible, forcing the process can weaken the fabric.
For this reason, we set an appropriate restoration goal at the time of the estimate.
In some cases, we may need to perform small tests (on fabric behavior, dyes, and chemicals) before giving a precise estimate.
At our workshop, we regard “returning the kimono to a condition in which it could be sold as new in a kimono shop” as 100% restoration.
4. Agreement & Payment
If you are satisfied with our proposed methods, restoration goal, and estimate, and you decide to proceed, we will receive payment and then begin work.
Available payment methods at the studio:
- Cash
- Credit card
- PayPay
- Bank transfer
Please note that credit card and PayPay payments are processed in a single lump-sum payment.
5. Service (Restoration Work)
We will carry out the agreed restoration work with the aim of achieving the set restoration goal.
If you have a specific date when you plan to wear the kimono, please let us know in advance so that we can take this into account when planning the schedule.
If any issues arise during the work—for example, if we encounter an unexpected condition—we will pause the work and contact you to discuss how to proceed before continuing.
6. Delivery
When the work is complete, we will contact you.
At that time, we will discuss how you would like to receive your kimono:
- Pick-up at our studio
- Return by courier (within Japan)
We will do our best to accommodate your preferred method.
Consultation by Shipping (Within Japan)
1. Contact & Shipping Your Items
If you wish to send your kimono to us by courier or post from within Japan,
please first contact us by phone or through the contact form about the items you plan to send.
When you ship your items, please include:
- Your preferred contact information (phone and/or email)
- A simple memo describing:
- Which stains or areas you are concerned about
- Any deadlines or upcoming occasions
- Other requests or questions
If you prefer, you can also print out and use our “application form” (available on the Japanese page).
If anything is unclear, feel free to call us for guidance.
2. How to Pack and Ship
- Fold the kimono neatly.
- Place it in a plastic bag (we recommend using two layers) to protect it from moisture.
- Use a strong outer bag or cardboard box to prevent the plastic from tearing.
- If possible, please ship on a day with good weather to reduce the risk of water damage during transport.
- Please send your parcel prepaid (shipping at the sender’s expense).
- Arrange the shipment so that it arrives during our business hours.

3. Proposal & Estimate
When your items arrive, we will first contact you—by your preferred method—to confirm their safe arrival.
We will then examine your kimono based on your requests and the information you provided, and propose:
- The most suitable restoration methods
- A realistic restoration goal
- An estimate
As with in-person consultations, we aim for complete stain removal, but we will not push the work beyond what the fabric can safely tolerate.
We set a restoration goal at the time of the estimate, and in some cases, we may conduct small tests before giving a precise quote.
We consider “restoring the kimono to a condition suitable for sale as new in a kimono shop” to be 100% restoration.
4. Agreement & Payment
If you agree with our proposed methods, restoration goal, and estimate, we will ask you to make payment before beginning work.
For mail-in orders, payment is generally by bank transfer.
